Adelaide Ristori was a famous actress who lived from 1822 till 1906. She was a very
social, well known and beloved person in her time. The informal letter has been written in Paris on March 29, 1856 to a friend called Betta (Betty). She writes that she feels sorry not contacting earlier and bought a set of knives and forks as a present. A position for a governess is available in the house of the opera tenor Mayer (of who she writes that he is married with an older woman). She goes on with a joke about a "sleeping signora Lucia" who should come to busy artistic Paris where everybody is making a lot of money with the production of Legouve's Medea (In 1856 Mrs.Ristori paid a second visit to Paris and played in Montanelli's Italian translation of Medea). a.o. mentioned are a planned trip to London in June; that she had earned enough money to pay a servant and that she would like to buy a house and raise kids. Manuscript letter written on 4 sides with sizes ca 133 x 210 mm or 5 2/8 x 8 2/8 inches. Condition is good with at first page glue remains and discolouring on top edge; 1st leaf with a tear on top at outer edge (ca 1 1/4 inch - without text loss) and at two places at inner edge of glue remains/discolouration (also without text loss). One of the last tears runs a bit over the fold to page 4. A fold vertical and one horizontal. Paper light yellowish/brown. Sold |
